Welcome to the Avenue Writers’ Group

We are a group of people from all walks of life and varying backgrounds who meet to share a common interest: we are passionate about words and writing; be it prose, poetry or drama, fiction or non-fiction. In line with the spirit of the Avenue Neighbourhood House, we offer a welcoming, friendly, and supportive environment in which creativity and freedom of expression can flourish.

Among our number we have both first-time and established writers, and also some published authors, who come together to share their work and insights, to constructively critique the work of others, and offer advice and support to fellow members.

We meet as a group every Friday from 10am to 12pm at the Avenue Neighbourhood House, 87 Eley Road, Blackburn South during the Victorian school terms.

This is a critique group specifically for those who write for children and teens. The function fo the group is to support each other as fellow writers, critique each other's work and share industry knowledge. The group is made up of both published and unpublished writers of fiction and non-fiction. Newcomers are welcome but numbers are limited.

Our tutor, award-winning poet and children's writer Catherine Bateson, will run a series of online classes in Term 3 focussing on Diverse voices:

Each week we will discuss the poem featured on the previous week's Slow Down https://www/slowdownshow.org (a weekly poem podcast curated by Tracy K Smith) accompanied by another poem which I will provide. The theme of the class is diverse voices and the aim is to introduce us all to a diversity of contemporary poets, paired with more familiar modern poets from both the UK and the US.
